Editor’s note: This blog was written before Governor Cuomo announced that outdoor tennis would be permitted statewide beginning Friday, May 15.

While golfers get to experience “Farfegnugen” driving golf balls, tennis is closed and the question is why?

Both sports can be played with social distancing and modifications to make them relatively safe.

The risk is that players and operators may act irresponsibly in their zeal to reemerge from isolation. This risk, while real, is low, first because the reopening of golf has been successful but most compellingly because in this area, WE KNOW WHAT FAILURE LOOKS LIKE.

We have flattened the curve as a local population because we are careful. Tennis players in particular are health minded, highly aware and very well-prepared.

England is opening both golf and tennis this Wednesday.

It’s time.
