Entering the New York Open this week, Canadian Brayden Schnur had never won a match in the main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament.

That changed on Tuesday night as Schnur defeated fellow Canadian Jack Lin, a sophomore at Columbia, 6-1, 6-3 to book his spot in the second round.

“It’s been a good week so far. A week of firsts for me,” said Schnur, who won two matches in qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw. “It’s my first tour level win today. So I’m pretty happy about that and satisfied with the way I managed expectations.”

Schnur saved all three break points he faced, and was able to pounce on Lin’s serve twice in the first set and once more in the second set to advance in one hour and 16 minutes.

“I thought he played a really good match today,” Schnur said of Lin. “He played me tough, he made me work for my serve, made me work for off the ground so I was impressed with the way he played.”

He moves into a matchup with American Steve Johnson next.

In the final match of the night session, 2018 finalist Sam Querrey battled back from a break down late in the opening set to defeat South African Lloyd Harris 7-6(2), 6-2.
