Roslyn, Syosset Win Nassau Playoff Openers

The Nassau County playoffs began on Thursday afternoon with the first round of action being played, and Roslyn and Syosset were two of the teams that pushed into the quarterfinals with victories.

Third-seeded Roslyn defeated the Conference III-B champions Calhoun 7-0, sweeping all seven courts to book its spot in the final eight.

The Bulldogs of Roslyn will host sixth-seeded Manhasset, who defeated South Side 5-2 behind its second doubles tandem, Ida Poulos and Sabrina Lee, who notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over South Side’s Emma White and Karly McCarthy to lead the way.

The fourth-seeded Syosset Braves knocked off Conference III-A champion Glen Cove with a 6-1 win on Thursday. Stephanie Wiener and Alexa Brecher sealed the Syosset win with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Natalie Corella and Colleen Lynch at second doubles, and put them into a quarterfinal matchup against Cold Spring Harbor.

Cold Spring Harbor edged Great Neck South 4-3 to advance on Thursday.

The top two seeds in the tournament, Port Washington and Great Neck North, received first-round byes, and were off on Thursday. Port Washington will face off with Hewlett, who won 6-1 against North Shore, and Great Neck North will play Oceanside, who was a 4-3 victor over Friends Academy, in the other Nassau County quarterfinals.
