Krawietz, Mies Win New York Open for First ATP Title

Playing in just their fourth ATP Tour main draw as a team, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies captured their first title together on Sunday afternoon, winning the New York Open doubles championship with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.

“It means the world to us at the moment. It’s unbelievable, this feeling. It’s hard to describe,” said Mies. “It’s really a dream come true for us. We worked so hard for it. It’s our first ATP title. It’s a special feeling. I didn’t know how the feeling would be like, but I can tell you it’s an amazing feeling. And we’re super happy to win it.”

Krawietz and Mies secured the decisive break for a 4-3 lead in the opening set, and would go on to serve out the set to take the early advantage. In the second, both duos continued to battle closely with holds of serve through the first 10 games.

But thats when Krawietz and Mies worked themselves deep into the service game of [insert player], and a running passing shot from Mies won the break and put them ahead 6-5.

In the ensuing service game, Mies served out the match and closed it out with an overhead smash on championship point.

“It was an unbelievable tournament. This is the best tournament that we’ve played together,” said Krawietz. “From the first match here we felt very good.”

Over the last year-and-a-half, the German duo have developed a chemistry together on the court which resulted in six Challenger titles. They cracked into an ATP Tour level main draw for the first time together at last year’s Wimbledon Championships, and went on to reach the Round of 16.

And on Sunday they took home their first hardware together and became the second doubles champions in New York Open history.
