Hewlett freshman Rachel Arbitman won the Nassau County Singles title, downing New Hyde Park’s Steffi Antao 6-0, 6-2 in Sunday’s final.

Entering the tournament as the fourth-seed, the ninth-grader won her all matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Great Neck North’s Amy Delman in the semifinals, on her way to the county final.

In the final she met New Hyde Park’s Steffi Antao, a semifinalist a year ago who had dropped only one set on her way to the final. But Arbitman proved to be too tough in the championship match, notching a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Antao.

“I think I handled the timing really well because of all the rain delays, and was able to come out strong,” said Arbitman. “In the semifinals against Amy, she was unbelievably well and I wasn’t playing my best, but I told myself to keep righting because I really wanted to win and get to States. I knew I had to come out even stronger in the finals, and I was able to do that and played well.”

Arbitman and Antao both qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) championships in late October. Delman will also qualify for states as she defeated Glen Cove’s Trinity Chow in the third-place match.

Port Washington has had an outstanding season so far this fall, compiling a 13-match winning streak on its way to a Conference I championship. The duo of Thea Rabman and Martine McGowan were a major reason for that success, and it showed during the Nassau County doubles tournament, as the duo beat Kaya and Kavina Amin of Wheatley 6-4, 6-3 in the county final.

The two teams qualify for the state tournament, along with North Shore’s Olivia and Ava Scordo, who finished in third-place.
