International Tennis Hall of Famer and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Gigi Fernandez will return as head coach for the New York Empire, the team announced on Tuesday.

Fernandez, a winner of 17 Grand Slam doubles titles during a career that spanned from 1983 to 1997, is the only female coach currently in World TeamTennis. Fernandez’ first obligation is the upcoming WTT Draft on Tuesday, March 13. The New York Empire currently holds the fourth pick in the draft.

In her first season with the team, Fernandez turned the New York Empire around in 2017 finishing in third place with a record of 7-7.

“We made some progress in 2017 by more than tripling our win total but now it’s time to get our roster in order to make a championship run and bring home the King Trophy,” said Fernandez. “We’ll set our roster next Tuesday and then it’s time to start thinking strategy. Having one season under my belt will certainly help me fine tune our plans as I get to work again with some amazing athletes.”

The 2018 WTT Draft will take place on March 13 at noon ET from Indian Wells, Calif. Fans can watch the draft live on www.WTT.com.
