Roger Federer continued his bid for a sixth BNP Paribas Open title by rolling past 23rd seeded Brit Kyle Edmund 6-1, 6-4 to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals on Wednesday.

“He didn’t have the best start, so that cost him the first set,” said Federer. “Second set, it was definitely better. I think he probably struggled throughout a little bit. He never really got going. Conditions are tough with the glare, and the jump of the ball is sometimes hard to find the rhythm and timing.”

Edmund double-faulted twice in his first service game and was never able to recover. Federer saved all seven break points he faced and needed just one hour and three minutes to advance.

Federer moves onto the 13th Indian Wells quarterfinal of his career, and will take on Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who took out Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3.

Second-seed Rafael Nadal defeated Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-4 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals against 12th seed Karen Khachanov, who knocked out American John Isner 6-4, 7-6(1).

On the women’s side, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu continued her torrid run to start 2019, reaching the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Garbine Muguruza. Andreescu needed less than an hour to advance, and will take on sixth-seed Elina Svitolina for a spot in the finals.

Svitolina came back from a set down to beat Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
