Kim Clijsters, currently ranked number two on the WTA Tour, will be sidelined for at least a month with shoulder and wrist injuries. It has been speculated that a busy schedule in the first part of 2011 may have led to overexhaustion as her recovery time will force her to miss next week’s Fed Cup matchup for her home country of Belgium as they face off against the Czech Republic.

Clijsters will also miss the Madrid Open (April 29-May 8), but she has targeted a return prior to the French Open in late May. After winning the year’s first major at the Australia Open, she played the Fed Cup and Paris in February before heading to the United States for two long tournaments. Last week, she lost in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami to the number eight seed and eventual Sony Ericsson Open winner, Victoria Azarenka, 6-3, 6-3.

“I felt something was not quite right,” Clijsters said of her appearance in Miami. “There were too many successive aches and pains that just didn’t want to disappear. It gets into your head.”
