With the inaugural New York Open just a few weeks away, Carefree Racquet Club in Merrick held ballpersons tryouts on Sunday night to finalize the crop of folks who will be on court during the ATP 250 Series tournament.

Carefree, which is the official practice facility for the tournament, hosted over 60 participants, including some current U.S. Open ballpersons, as they were tested for speed, agility, throwing, rolling and tennis knowledge.

World champion handball player and Bay Shore resident, Yolanda Monroe, was one of the participants trying out for a shot at being a New York Open ballperson.

“The experience today was fantastic,” said Monroe. “I learned so much, it’s always been something I wanted to. I can’t wait for this exciting event.”
