Caroline Garcia beat Ana Ivanovic for the third consecutive time on Tuesday in Stuttgart, Germany, knocking the Serb out of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix first-round with a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory.

After falling behind in the opening set, Ivanovic looked as if she would get the better of Garcia. She came back from a 3-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker, and then opened up a 6-3 advantage in the breaker.

But the former world number one coughed up three set points and allowed Garcia to win the next five points to take the opening set.

Garcia then broke twice in the second set to take it 6-4, beating the fifth-seed Ivanovic in one hour and 37 minutes.

The Frenchwoman will meet Carina Witthoeft of Germany. Witthoeft beat compatriot Mona Barthel 7-5, 6-3 on Monday.

Carla Suarez-Navarro avoided an upset herself, beating Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4 to win her first match as a top 10 player. The eighth-seeded Spaniard will take on the winner of Julia Goerges and Belinda Bencic.

Ekaterina Makarova edged out American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 7-6(3) to push through, while American Madison Brengle advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Italy’s Alberta Brianti.

Lucie Safarova, Garbine Muguruza and Marina Melnikova rounded out the first-round winners on Tuesday.
