Bethpage State Park Tennis Center Directors Steve Kaplan and Keith Kambourian hosted a coaches forum on Sunday, March 20 at their club. More than 20 Long Island high school coaches and players attended the event which ran from 4:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
"We show them some new drills and techniques they can use with their players and they give us their feedback," said Kaplan. "It is a way to build an independent relationship between the instructors and the coaches. It is an open dialogue where they can ask questions about their students."
Farmingdale High School's Pete Macchia, Walt Whitman's Erika Nichols and Herricks' Ray Cross were among the many coaches who watched as Kaplan and Kambourian demonstrated various serving and volleying techniques. Frank Dolan, owner of All 4 Sports and Fitness, was on hand as well, to show coaches flexibility and core strength exercises for their players.
"The majority of power comes from your core whether it be a sport like tennis, baseball or golf," said Dolan. "It is important to strengthen this section of your body to prevent injury and to perform better."
The event was a great success and Steve and Keith are already looking forward to next year's outing.
"We want to thank the coaches who attended, and I hope to see them again at next year's event," said Kaplan. " Also, thanks to Danny Burgess and the USTA Eastern/Long Island Region for their support."
