Long Island Finishes Strong at 2010 NYS Championships

The 2010 New York State High School Girls Tennis Championships took place this past weekend, Nov. 6-8 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y. Girls from both Nassau and Suffolk Counties were on hand, joining forces at the event proudly representing Long Island and leaving a strong impact in the process. In singles play, Hannah Camhi of Syosset High School, the number three-seeded in the tournament,  finished second overall, losing in the finals to Jamie Loeb of Ossining High School, 6-2, 6-0. 

The number two seed and Nassau County Girls Singles Champ, Jacqueline Raynor of Garden City, lost in the quarterfinals to Arielle Shuren of Suffren High School, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. This match was one of the best of the tournament, as Jacqueline was down 5-2 in the second set, and fought off several match points, to win that set, showing a lot of heart and determination along the way. She was tied at 3-3 in the third set, when she ran out of steam. 

Also in the quarterfinals, there was an all-Long Island matchup as Hannah Camhi of Syosset, runner-up to Raynor in the Nassau County Tournament, defeated Suffolk County Singles Champion, Nadia Smergut of Ross School, 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, Camhi defeated the girl that had knocked Raynor out of the tournament, Arielle Shuren,6-3, 6-4.

Congratulations also to quarterfinalist Samantha Elgort of Half Hollow Hills West … Elgort fell to eventual event winner Loeb. 

In the Consolation Singles final, Farmingdale High School’s Devlin Ann Ammendola defeated Sara Finger of Smithtown High School East in the semifinals, 8-3, on her way to the finals against Eva Siska from Cornwall High School. Farmingdale’s Ammendola took the 2010 Girls Consolation Singles Title with an 8-4 over Siska.

Long Island was strongly represented in doubles action as well, as Westhmpton High School’s Diana Vamvakitis & Jamie Hann defeated the number eight-seeded team of Deana Davoudiasl & Rachel Shenker from South Side High School, 6-4, 6-2, to capture fourth place in the 2010 Girls Doubles Championship. However, both teams lost in the quarterfinals, with Davoudiasl & Shenker losing to the eventual champions, the number one-seeded team of Shiho Sato & Kaho Sato from the Keio Academy, 6-3, 6-3. The Sato sisters won the event for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations also to the team of Carly Siegel & Zenat Rashidzada from Half Hollow Hills West for advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2010 New York State Girls Doubles Championship. Emma Brenner of Great Neck South in Nassau County and Sara Finger from Smithtown East in Suffolk County were both honored with Sportsmanship Awards.
